5 Tips for Your Fall Tablescape

It’s no secret that we’re fans of simplicity, especially when it comes to decor. While fall tablescapes are no exception, a few simple touches here and there can add seasonal charm. Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving, a friends dinner, or weekly book club with hors d'oeuvres, try one or all of these tips to make it feel like the perfect amount of autumn.

Tip 01

Lay a flexible foundation
Start by giving yourself a versatile base layer, with a warmly neutral tablecloth or table runner. Think: cream, deep gray, or light brown. Need help choosing a size? Check out our Tablecloth Sizing Guide. From there, you can also add in placemats, which are especially practical if you just go with a table runner down the center.

Tip 02

Create pops of color against a neutral base
Decorative fruits, florals, and accessories are the perfect way to tie in the deeper, moody tones of autumn. Set against the table’s more neutral base palette, a pop of color in your centerpieces or with tapered candles can round out the look, without overwhelming it.

Tip 03

Go with some unexpected tableware
Color and pattern aren’t limited to the table’s decor. Try swapping in textured stoneware, reeded glass cups, or matte utensils to add something that feels equally unexpected as it does natural in the place settings.

Tip 04

Forage for seasonal foliage
One convenient thing about fall tablescape decor? It’s super easy to use dried florals and grasses as flourishes, straight out of your backyard. Fallen leaves from the magnolia or maple tree — onto the table. A simple branch with berries — onto the table. The tall ornamental grass on the side of the house — yep, onto the table.

Tip 05

Take advantage of a cool fall evening
Whenever weather permits, setting up to dine al fresco in the fall can make for a magical evening. Take full advantage while you still can — even if it means having a few throw blankets handy for after sundown.
