SS24: How lovely the silence of growing things

Spring comes with a sort of hunger for light, warmth, and that deep exhale after holding your breath through a long winter. This spring we’ve found ourselves craving a soft space to appreciate growth. Much like plants, the majority of motherhood is quiet work (not in terms of decibels but in applause). No one is rewarding you for the little lessons on a car ride, the note in a lunchbox, the character building experiences at a sport, the nourishment for bodies, or bolstering their self esteem to face their unique challenges. There are smells, scenes, and feelings etched in our hearts forever which usually involve watching, listening, praying, sorrowing, rallying, encouraging, and loving that only a few will see. Unmistakably, it’s all such growth, for them and us.

 

As we welcome a new season, let’s hold on to both the silence and the loveliness of growing things. Maybe together we can make space for living in stillness. For when the noise hushes, it seems like we more easily acclimate with patience to the time it takes to grow the worthwhile. Maybe we can breathe deeply as things unfold, trusting the process. Maybe we can allow ourselves gentleness for progress, willingness to let go of plans, and gratitude for the gifts we already have.
