G: Can you introduce your Other Mother?
B: Kristin is my sister-in-law. My husband and I got married last year around the time that she and her husband had just bought a house, and they offered to let us rent out their basement. So I guess we kinda live together!
G: Why has this relationship been important to you?
B: I look up to Kristin a lot. At one point, I had both of my sisters living nearby, but now they have both moved away and I don’t have a ton of extended family around anymore either. But she has totally taken me in and has become my new family.
G: Is there one story that sums up who Kristin is?
B. Last summer, we went to our husbands’ family cabin with the entire extended family. It was my first time doing something with my husband’s entire family so I felt like I had to get to know everyone and do everything right. After a couple of days though, I started feeling a little overwhelmed and felt like I could never relax. I didn’t say anything about it, but Kristin noticed and told me that she felt the same way the first time she went up to the cabin too and told me that it’s totally okay to go be alone sometimes and not try so hard. It really eased the pressure and helped me enjoy my time with the family for the rest of our time there, as well as on for future vacations. It also helped to know that I had someone else in the same boat as me!
G: What do you hope Kristin knows about herself?
B:That she is amazing! She just had her first baby earlier this year and I have been amazed at how gracefully she is handling motherhood. She has such a positive attitude. It will probably be a couple more years before my husband and I start having kids, but her example makes me so excited for that day to come.
G: What is something Kristin has taught you?
B: She inspires me to look forward to the future, to take every day one step at a time, and to have fun along the way!
